The Geek’s Guide To Geeks

Jacob was a person of many talents.  He was one of the top students in his class, with a 4.3 GPA and a good understanding of STEM fields.  Technology especially.  He only lacks one thing.  Social skills.  Poor Jacob couldn’t keep up a conversation if his life depended on it. He doesn’t seem to mind a whole lot though.  It gets annoying sometimes but he understands that, just like everyone else, he had to balance out his character some how. His charisma score may not be as high as the others around him, but it doesn’t matter too much.  He can still have a successful life. He just moved those points over to intelligence.  It won’t take long now, give him a few more years and he will create the next big disruptive product. Everyone will wonder how life could have gone on without him.

Jacob is a geek.  Years ago this would have been insulting to say but in today’s world, being considered a geek has risen in popularity.  Sure, geeks aren’t on the same level as the people who are good at sports or music, but they are respected just as much in some cases. According to Pew research, 95% of people have a cellphone in their pocket. Other have a computer in their backpack or a TV in their homes.  Every time you look at one of these and many more devices, you have to realize that they wouldn’t be there if it wasn’t for geeks. The modern world wouldn’t be the modern world without the technology and discovery that came from the geeks of yesterday.

Geeks have been a prominent part of media as well.  With movies coming out with them as main characters, people are starting to get use to nerds taking main roles in things.  In the new Jumanji movie for instance, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, that main character’s name is Spencer.  He plays a whole lot of video games and is known as one of the nerds.  There is a scene right at the start when he is trying to talk with a girl he likes and is extremely awkward. He just doesn’t have the confidence.

Another example of this is in Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.  The father in this scene is very busy with his experiment that he pushes his son, who clearly wants to be like him, away.

Sadly though a lot of the things that geeks were made fun of for today are still true. They still typically have problems being in social spaces or empathizing with those around them. These types of things can be frustrating sometimes when you are use to working with those people who are a little more socially adept.  This can even be frustrating for other geeks when trying to communicate with fellow geeks. Trying to understand the quirks of each person is like trying to learn a whole other language. It can take time before you can tell if they are, for instance, actually joking or not. This could come from any number of things including possible mental health issues.  This is why it is important for people who work with geeks to understand how they think and why they think the way they do.

It may take time, as working with a geek can be difficult sometimes.  It doesn’t take long to realize that they can be very valuable assets. Their knowledge and intellect can come in handy.  When you look at some of the top companies in the world, every single one of them uses some type of technology to do what they need to do. There is a reason why the urban dictionary definition of a geek is “The people you pick on in high school and wind up working for as an adult”.  Behind each line of code in there is a geek.
